nudity

I know this blog post should be about my commencement. However, I am more interested in another topic.

NUDITY

Well, questions surrounding this word ain’t new to me. This time it was induced by a huge heading on some tabloid newspaper (the Chinese evening newspapers to be exact). It wrote that Jackie Chan admitted that he acted in R film in the past. Then I wondered to myself, is it really that wrong?

First and foremost, why do people make acting in pornographic films sound so wrong? Then, if it is wrong, why are they still being produced? Well, the answer is so simple that even non-economics student will be able to tell you that, there is DEMAND for it. And then, judging from the fact that this porn market ain’t small, it would logically mean that there is a significant demand for pornographic films.

So, let’s map it out clearly. Assuming the world is a country of its own (well, we have been talking about global village didn’t we?), there is a large pool of people involved in the porn supply market. And their livelihood can only be supported if there is a larger amount of people involved in the demand side of the porn market. Thus, if there is such a huge pool of people demanding pornography out there, why do they despise people working in the supply side? Since, it is logical that if people don’t need something, it would stop being in existence. Much like cassette tapes, walkmans etc.

However, when celebrities or people around them are proven to have acted in pornographic films, they would show disdain. Why? This is something I can’t fathom. Shouldn’t they be giving thumbs-up and cheering on the actors and actresses in pornographic films. Honestly, if no one is willing to act, there goes your porn! In this area, people are acting abnormally. Well, if you are a mac-fan or iphone fanatic, you would be at least indifferent and at the most, ecstatic when you meet someone working in Apple Inc. However, it doesn’t seem like the case when it comes to porn.

On another note, I was wondering whether nudity is such a disgusting thing that it should be avoided. Honestly, I don’t like porn. But I don’t mind watching films with nudity or sexual scenes. For me, it is really simple. Nudity and sex scenes are important if they are tools to bring across the message that the director is trying to convey. However, if sex is the message itself (i.e. porn), then maybe it’s not for me. But, that is just my insignificant opinion.

Perhaps, porn is only disgusting and all when the people who watch and the people who produce have a wrong agenda in doing so. If you look at nudity and sex as something that is natural, kind of instinctive, something that is like someone eating dinner or drinking beer, then perhaps, you won’t find people working in the line disgusting and look down upon people in that line.

Seriously, the more puzzling part is. Why do men like to watch pornographic films and am so strongly against girls, especially their girlfriends or wives, to be part of it? Don’t tell me they don’t look down on actresses in pornographic films even though they don’t want their girlfriends or wives to be part of it, it’s utter bullshit!
