Help the Yazidis

This term maybe foreign to most of us, living safely in this part of the world. I also didn’t know about them until the KBS World documentary – The Land of Mankind.

Yazidis are a group of people who have Kurdish origins and their faith is placed in Yazidism. Before I continue further, I will just like to point out that this post is not meant to be about religions.

Yazidis do not have a land of their own that they call country and many of them are scattered in different nations as minorities. They are in Iraq, Armenia, Turkey and even many parts of Europe like Germany and France.

So, why am I bringing up this group of people to your attention?

Please help them. I have no idea how but maybe help to spread about their existence and hope that one day, the word gets to people who really could do something about it.

They are a group of people who endured persecutions throughout their generations. If you google Yazidi Genocide, you will come across lots of articles that talked about it. One of the events covered by the documentary occurred in 1915 and although, it is largely recognised as the Armenian Genocide, many of the Yazidis died during this event. This terrible crime of its time is committed by the Ottoman Turkey against the Armenian Christians and the Yazidis. It is partly due to this act of brutality that many of the Yazidis are now residing in Armenia.

Iraq also has a significant number of Yazidis but their numbers are declining rapidly due to the vast amount of terrorist attacks on their villages and mass killings such as the 2007 Mosul massacre. Yes! It is that recent! Just 3 years ago! Living here in Singapore where people from diverse religions, races and walks of life co-exist harmoniously, it is very difficult for us to imagine how it will be like to be persecuted for who you are and what you cannot change. It is also scary to note that an opposition opinion can cause you your life.

Even for those Yazidis who are living peacefully in Armenia, the future looks bleak and filled with the unknown. According to the KBS World documentary, Yazidis were not allowed to own land. Hence, many of them live in fear that one day, the Armenians might chase them away like what the Ottoman Turks did in the past.

These are innocent lives. Very very innocent lives. I don’t understand why would differences in religion lead anyone to commit the crime of murder. I do not know how the lives of other Yazidis are in countries other than Iraq and Armenia since it wasn’t covered in the documentary. I hope they are well and not persecuted or mistreated because of their religion and who they are.
